Socially Distant Alternatives to Trick-or-treating

Socially Distant Alternatives to Trick-or-treating

Like much of 2020, Halloween will be different than what we are all used to. Since some towns and cities have cancelled trick-or-treating and other gatherings this year due to COVID-19 and a safe, socially distant trick-or-treating outing may not be feasible, here are a few alternatives to traditional trick-or-treating to make the best of Halloween 2020:

Jack-o-Lantern Carving Contest:

Bring everyone together in the neighborhood by having a Jack-o-Lantern carving contest. Each participant can display their pumpkin in front of their home.Neighborhood participants walk around the neighborhood taking pictures and vote on each Jack-o-Lantern on a scale of 1-5. Once everyone has voted, add the scores for each pumpkin and the winners can be given prizes. You could also include award categories like most traditional or scariest. Don’t forget to leave fun candy bags out to sway the voters!

Virtual Costume Party:

Organize a virtual costume party over zoom. Create categories by age and don’t forget your pets!. All participants submit a picture prior to the party. Come together in your costumes for the Zoom party to announce the winners for prizes! For extra fun, you could drop off snacks and favors before the party.

Halloween Scavenger Hunt:

Invite the neighborhood kids to a ghoulish scavenger hunt. Dress in your best costume, draw a spooky map, share clues with participants over e-mail and hide candy throughout the common areas of your neighborhood.. “X” marks the spot!

No matter how you decide to spend your Halloween 2020, always remember to stay safe!

For helpful tips, follow the Centers for Disease Control and Preventions guidelines and if you are driving, be sure to watch for children near roadways.

Happy Halloween!
